Recently, my husband and I made the transition to having an empty nest. We began raising children back in 1989 with the birth of our son. For the past 24 years, we've been co-laboring on the process of bringing up children who love, honour, and serve God. We also made sure that they were prepared to become productive adults who could take care of themselves. We felt strongly that God had called us to homeschool our children and so we did so - all the way through.

 

When my son was born, my mother-in-law gave me some very wise advice. She told me to remind myself every day that my child did not belong to me and that one day he would leave home. She pointed out that having a child actually become an independent adult meant that you had done your job as parents. It was to be celebrated, not mourned. I followed this advice faithfully when our son moved out on his own at age 21 in October of 2010 and then one month later when our daughter got married and (of course) moved out to live with our son-in-law.

 

I had this whole "learn 'em and launch 'em" thing down pat! Or so I thought. Fast-forward to this year. Spring, to be exact. My husband and I took an extended trip to Florida in anticipation of a move to that state in the summer of 2014. By then, our youngest child would be 20 years old and definitely ready to be out on her own just like her brother and sister. Of course, we were anxious to move to Florida sooner if possible, but more than willing to wait if need be.

 

Imagine our surprise when we returned home on March 25th to the news that a female friend had asked our daughter to share an apartment with her! Our daughter had just had three weeks on her own here at home and realized that she enjoyed adulthood and being self-sufficient A LOT. She was a little nervous (as many children are) about the idea of moving out on her own, but she "did the math" and realized it could be done. She also felt strongly that it was time. The final decision was made in early April and just one short month later, we helped her move into her new place (which is very cute, I might add).

 

The following morning was a Sunday. I found myself feeling very sentimental. Every thought was about how I could no longer go back and experience the past with my children. It was gone and I could not get it back. I am not speaking here about regretting anything about the past. Our parenting experience, while hard, was one of the best experiences we've ever had in our lives! No, I am talking about the thoughts like:

"I miss my son as a baby."

 

"I really miss waking up to my daughter playing worship music on her guitar."

 

"I miss the smiling face of my youngest greeting me every morning. "

 

"I wish they didn't grow up so fast."

 

I'm sure many of you know exactly what I mean. We lament and cry over our child's milestones because we know they will never come again. We grieve for the time that is past that we cannot go back to. We are sad at the growth of our children. And that's what we're supposed to do, right?

 

I thought so. And then GOD SPOKE. My husband was teaching a parenting study the following Monday and happened to be reading about the children of Israel complaining about their current circumstances and wanting to go back to Egypt. As I listened to him read, I heard God clearly say, "When you grieve over the passage of time and events in the lives of your children, you are being just like the children of Israel. You're not happy and content in the current place/season in life I've called you to. No, instead, you're lamenting about how great things were in the past and thus how bad things are now."

 

WOW! That was a lightning bolt from heaven for me! I quickly realized that when we spend our time lamenting the things that are past, we are missing out on what God has for our present and future.

 

Now, just to clarify, this does not mean that we can never think about the past. On the contrary, God has called us to remember the past and teach our children about it. But, what we're supposed to be doing is something like this:

 

"Remember when you were ten and got your leg stuck in between the pool and the deck? Remember how God intervened and helped Mom and your brother to move the heavy wooden deck to free you? Remember how gracious God was to protect you from any broken bones or serious injury?"

 

Or

 

"Remember how you used to organize and keep track of all your LEGOS by color? God sure gave you an amazing skill or organization from even a young age. And you continued to use that skill to serve him in many ways."

 

Or

 

"Remember that mission trip you took to Romania when you were only 15? Mom did not breathe the entire week, but her prayer life certainly got a lot stronger! It was pretty cool to see God's hand working in other nations, wasn't it?"

 

You can ask my children. This is not something I've done in the past. BUT, it is something I've determined to do in the future. No more mourning over where we've been and what is past. No more crying over the fact that time is passing and that children grow up. No more wishing I was not where God has me currently.

 

Instead, I will rejoice over each milestone knowing that God has called me to the here and now. I will see the passage of time as the chance to celebrate the events that God has brought us to and through. There may be tears, but I have purposed that they will be TEARS OF JOY and not tears of sadness.

Sunny, Cloudy, Stormy, and Foggy

My post last week reminded me about this teaching I heard at a Christian Women’s conference.

In her book Help! I’m Laughing and I Can’t Get Up, Liz Curtis Higgs tells about what she calls, The Four Humor Personalities.

They are, and I quote:

“Sunny – Fun-loving, people orientated, enthusiastic, and energetic, the Sunny soul loves life and enjoys being center stage, but hates getting organized, often arrives late, and never remembers names! Sunnies laugh no matter what the weather. Of those surveyed, 32 percent shone like the sun.

Cloudy - Serious, purposeful, logical, and neat, the Cloudy person is conscientious, thoughtful, and altogether wonderful-as long as you don’t mind having a moody perfectionist in your midst. Cloudies are saving their laughs for a rainy day. Among our contributors, 28 percent are not convinced every cloud has a silver lining.

Stormy – The born leader of the bunch, the stormy is part hard-working visionary who gets things done and keeps things moving, someone who isn’t too difficult to get along with, as long as you do it their way! Stormies laugh wherever and whenever they feel like it.

Foggy – Everybody’s friend, the peace-loving Foggy would rather watch then get involved, is a great listener and mediator, and has a dry sense of humor-when they’re not being a wet blanket! As laughers go Fogies are great smilers. Because they’re so quiet, you might not notice the 17 percent among those surveyed who are in a fog.”

Our family has had hours of fun and laughter discussing this topic. Try it – it would be a fun school project to try to determining each person’s personality type.

I recently read this description of people:

"Drifters just go with the flow, pushed this way and that by the wind and waves of circumstances. They look around and say, ‘Whatever. It's all good.'
Surfers ride the waves, always looking for the next big thing.

Drowners stay in the center of a storm. Rescue them and they'll find another crisis and cry, ‘Help me, save me, I don't know what I'm going to do.'
But Sailors counteract the winds and waves of circumstance by rigging sails and twisting rudders.

But the sailor cannot navigate without an immovable object, a fixed point, a non-negotiable that is unaffected by circumstances. Without this guiding light there is nothing for us on life's ocean but to drift, surf, or drown." Mike Metzger

Though I hate to admit it, I’ve found myself being each one of these types at different times of my life – sometimes at different times of the day. I’m sure you can recognize these traits in yourself, your friends, and your children, right? But the Lord wants us to be sailors – and to choose Him as our immovable object, fixed point, and a non-negotiable that is unaffected by circumstances.

I plan to use this to help my children and I see what path we are on so that we can redirect ourselves to our Savior.

His Word bears this out:
Ephesians 4:14 KJV - That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

2 Corinthians 3:18 NKJV - But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

James 1:23 NKJV - For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

Fun Fridays

Introduction

 

Do you reserve one day a week for special activities?  When my children were much younger we had what we called Fun Fridays.  Over time those special days became fewer and fewer.  It might have been because their studies became more involved and required more time to complete.  Even though things are much different now, they still deserve a special day.  I have decided we need to reinstate our Fun Fridays.  Continue reading...

This is the wall beside our bathroom door.

It’s the first thing I see every morning.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him [be] glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.” Ephesians 3:20 KJV

It reminds me that the Lord has everything in his hand and that I’m His daughter.

The hat picture says “Together we’re better”. My husband left it in my car one morning when we were dating. It reminds me I am a wife and mother and we truly are better together.

The last item is from our wedding program. It says, “We love him, because he first loved us.” 1 John 4:19 KJV It reminds me that I cannot hope to love or do what I’m called to do without the Lord’s love.

After my shower and getting a cup of coffee I head for my quiet time spot.

As I walk towards my chair I see this verse: “Be still, and know that I [am] God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 KJV

It reminds me that I need to quiet the thoughts that are ping-ponging in my mind and let the Lord feed my spirit so I can serve Him today.

After quiet time I go to my desk where this verse greets me:

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15 KJV

It reminds me to do everything I’m called to do today as unto the Lord.

How have you surrounded yourself with the Word? What do your children see when they get up and are gathering for homeschool? It’s really something we should all think about.

One way to avoid the first pitfall, “Company Error,” is by establishing a relationship with the company that you are considering buying from. There is a lot of trust involved when you buy a textbook or other school supply based on reviews, without handling the actual product. You can create a relationship with a company by shopping there, calling their support number, or reading a lot of customer responses. Who is writing the reviews? What is their return policy? Do they welcome questions? How in-depth are the product descriptions?

In addition to the risk of buying new curriculum is the pressure of knowing if or when you should even try a new one! Is your student struggling? Or is it simply that YOU bored? Is your student actually learning the material? Is it too remedial, or too advanced? Is it too hands-on and project oriented when you have small children underfoot or a home business?

Frequently the poor experience comes from what I call “Parent Error.” For example, I became tired of the repetition found in Saxon’s spiraling information method, and I wanted to do something that made math instruction more exciting and involved. I spent $75 on a Miquon Math kit because it seemed more interesting than worksheets. I discarded it the next semester and went running back to Saxon. Many times “flaws” like repetitiveness are felt more on the part of the parent, and not the student who is doing the material for the first time. Another version of Parent Error is when the parent buys projects or supplements that they themselves would have enjoyed when they were a child. The parent fails to take the interests of the child into account.

Another time I changed books I began to understand what I call the “Recommendation Error.” I blindly followed the suggestion of my curriculum guide, The Well-Trained Mind, to buy Spelling Workout. This is a consumable, semester-long workbook that sells for $17 each. However, I will soon have four students in spelling, and at an annual cost of over $30 per student for one subject, it became too expensive for us. Now we use Natural Speller, an 8-year nonconsumable text. Although I highly value the opinion and suggestions of our curriculum guide, I need to keep in mind if each recommendation matches my own lifestyle. This is also true when buying based on the recommendations of friends. Do you share similar worldviews? Do you have children in similar age groups?

I learned about the “Paying for Free” error when I bought a Color Unit Study. I paid $15 for it and decided very soon after opening it that it wasn’t worth it. After handling it in person, I felt like I could have given the same instruction on color wheels to my children by simply googling it. Be sure to weigh these factors in your mind the next time you find your cursor hovering over the “buy” button!

You can follow the blog exploration of Classical Christian Education in general and their homeschool lifestyle in particular . Teresa divides her time between education, the home, shopping for curriculum, and stocking her Etsy storefront where you can find handmade cards and vintage photos.

For many years, I used and recommended vocabulary programs based in Latin and Greek roots, and I still like those programs. I realize that roots-based programs seem inaccessible to some people, so I’ve found an alternate program that’s amazingly user-friendly, highly effective, and fun. It’s WordBuild: A Better Way to Teach Vocabulary, and the entire program is contained in two comprehensive levels. WordBuild is “based on morphology, the study of the units of meaning in words. Just as phonology is the study of the sounds that make up words, morphology is the study of the meaningful pieces of words. A mastery of phonics helps students “sound out” unfamiliar words; a mastery of morphics helps students “mean out” unfamiliar words.”

The first series, Foundations, contains two levels and is designed to be used anytime after phonics have been taught. This level focuses on building words by adding prefixes and suffixes to words the student already knows. The second series, Elements, contains three levels and moves into the teaching and manipulation of Greek and Latin root words. After five years of study, the student should have not only a vast vocabulary, but also the tools to decipher virtually any word they encounter in the future.

Each week the learner is presented with a morpheme (word piece) such as “mob,” which means “to move.” There is a page of Word Fun Facts and a 15-minute activity for each day of the week to help the student learn and retain all the variations of the word. The very helpful teacher’s guide provides objectives and examples, as well as talking points, suggested dialog, and extended learning activities.

On Day 1, the student is presented with a Root Square, which provides more morphemes and challenges the student to combine two or more word parts to make as many words as possible. In the “mob” square, choices include four other forms of the root, plus “ive,” “auto,” “ize,” “com,” “im,” “ion,” “re,” and “ile.” If you play with those for a few minutes, you’ll get an idea of how many possibilities there are.

On Day 2, the student breaks apart words and matches them with their definitions, placing the number of the answer in the corresponding square of the Magic Box. When the box is correctly filled, the sum of the numbers is the same both across and down.

On Day 3, the student will use another visual aid, the Stair Steps to fill in words they discover from provided definitions.

On Day 4, the focus is on using newly acquired vocabulary in context. Students use an optional Comprehension Booster worksheet to choose the correct word to fill the blank in a sentence.

On Day 5, there is a 10-question multiple-choice assessment. I’m not usually a fan of multiple choice, as it’s just too easy, but when all the possible answers are based on the same morpheme, it boosts the challenge level. For example, one question asks the student to choose “Which word means to cause to be able to move?” The answer choices include “mobilize, mobile, or motile.” It’s clear that the student will need to have a good understanding of the morphemes in order to satisfactorily complete the questions.

The Foundations level would work very well in the elementary years, while Elements (from which the “mob” example was excerpted) would work well for middle and/or high school students. Students who complete the five years of WordBuild study early may wish to move into a root-based program for further study, or simply take Latin or another foreign language along with a solid literature program such as Excellence in Literature to build vocabulary naturally.

• Complete Teacher’s Manual with Answer Keys (written so that it can be used in classroom, co-op, or homeschool)
• Customizable software to quickly create additional exercises
• Access to online printable exercises

In addition, the Elements levels come with a free CD of WordBuild The Game®. This CD-based game installed easily on my computer and was an entertaining way to practice word building. There are several choices of accompanying music, from Vivaldi to techno, or the music can be turned off entirely while playing. The CD is compatible with both Mac and Windows.

Overall, this is a sound, comprehensive program that will provide a good vocabulary foundation. The Teacher’s Manual is an integral part of the program and makes teaching the units absolutely simple. The short daily lessons are compatible with Charlotte Mason’s belief that short lessons result in better retention of knowledge. WordBuild is well-done and visually appealing, and is a great option for vocabulary study.

I don’t do a formal curriculum for preschool. But there are many resources online that I take advantage of to work with my little ones on basic skills at their level and to encourage an interest of theirs. I don’t do a so-called preschool activity every day. We go in spurts depending on their interest level and my motivation. They usually just love to play, and I let them do a lot of that. And I talk with them a lot throughout the day, answer their questions and provide educational computer programs and DVD’s for them. They do a lot of PBS Kids online, Nick Jr. online, Webkinz Jr, and Jumpstart online.

That said, I do like to sit down with my little ones at least once a week and do some letter work or number work. I have bought the cheap books at Walmart, and we go through them together during the year. I don’t make a big deal about it, but if one of them wants to do school because they see the others doing school, we pull out the workbooks for them, too.

A lot of activities we do together as a family are based on the holiday that’s coming up, and the little ones get very excited about all of these!

Here is a wonderful website, chock-full of ideas for Homepreschooling, by a lady who has the same philosophy I have toward early learning. Her name is Susan Lemons. She gives us lots of ways to teach in a natural, fun way by using daily activities that you probably have to do anyway, just sharing them with your child. For example, you can teach children how to count by counting plates when setting the table for dinner and counting silverware, cups, etc. You can teach lots of number concepts by letting them cook with you, measuring, following steps in a recipe, etc. They learn to tell time and read the calendar when they’re anticipating something fun, and you tell them how much time or how many days are left. They start to pay lots of attention to time in these situations! Susan has written a book, too, that shares her philosophy and teaches some how-to’s and gives lots of ideas for natural learning at younger ages and stages and also moving on into older years called Homepreschool and Beyond. I found it on Amazon. I highly recommend visiting her site, too.

If you would feel more comfortable using a curriculum, here are some I would recommend.

Before Five in a Row – literature-based, using books you can get from the library. You would have to look through the table of contents to see if these are at your child’s level or if perhaps you need to go up to the next set which is called

Five in a Row These manuals are under $40 apiece and give you tons of ideas to supplement your reading of the best children’s books with educational activities. Very fun for student and teacher. They have Fold & Learn packets available, too, which are similar to lapbooks.

Sonlight

This curriculum is strongly Christian, it’s History- and Literature-based. I highly recommend it for its list of books to read at each level and to cover each time period in History.

Bob Books

These are simple, funny, easy readers for beginners with very few words and line drawings that add to the comic element of the stories without being distracting or giving away the meaning so that the child doesn’t have to pay attention to the words to sound them out. They actually have to read the words instead of the pictures.

Which reminds me – In Lieu of Preschool has tons of great ideas for preschoolers and she has a special section just for Bob Books.

Which also reminds me – my kids really liked Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam, Spy Fox, and Putt Putt computer CD-roms. You can find these at Amazon, too. They also liked lots of Jumpstart games. There are lots of educational CD-roms at Amazon.

Incorporating any of these ideas into your days should get your preschooler off to a very good start in their educational experience. Remember, it’s all about instilling a love for learning in your child. Don’t push or stress about it. Relax and have fun!
