This week in homeschool our unit study is over the book, Horton Hears A Who by Dr. Seuss. And today we talked about how to help those who are in need of a friend to help them out in a big way.
There are so many ways to help others. We chose to find out about Latte Losers.
from the website:
"Latte Losers is a movement of university students who are passionate about changing the lives of children all over the world...........providing food to children in serious risk of malnutrition, death or trafficking. By giving $5 a month (the average cost to feed a child for a month) one latte lost, one life radically changed."
Neither Kiley nor I drink coffee. We don't drink soda's either. Water and juice is about it. We don't buy junk food either. With being a one income family, our grocery budget is pretty tight. Kiley's favorite juice is Juicy Juice Strawberry Banana. She gets a jug once a week at $3.20. Which I think is pricey compared to the $1.99 Apple Juice. But we get both cause that's the deal. One apple juice and she picks the second one.
We talked about our friends in Guatemala and how they need help sometimes. How there are kids her age everywhere that don't get to eat everyday. And they aren't able to go into their kitchen and pick out something for a snack.
I asked her if she would be willing, once a month, to give up her favorite strawberry banana juice so that another little kid could eat dinner that month. She sat there and thought about it for a bit.
I could tell that she was really thinking it over. It was written all over her face. $5 really isn't that much, but it is to a kid. Especially giving up something that you enjoy! But I wanted it to be something she wanted to do. To learn what it's like to give up something important in order help out someone else. You can't teach that. It has to be experienced.
After about a minute, she said yes, that she would give up her juice. I am so proud of her! I gave her a big hug. The juice isn't $5 but we will make up the rest out of the grocery budget.
This is a very doable and simple way to impact a child's life!

As parents we have this in common: a deep love for our children and a strong desire to see them succeed in life. We pray for the blessings of a strong faith, a happy family, and great financial security for all our children. We would like to believe that modern education shares our vision, but the reality suggests otherwise.
A theory or method, regardless of its speaker’s titles and degrees or how eloquently he argues its case, is only as good as the results it produces. If we use results to measure the effectiveness of the United States Education System, we would be forced to conclude that it is one of the worst models ever conceived. There is no need to spout off statistics. There is no need to remind you that third world countries, where the students scribble their arithmetic in the dirt, are outperforming us academically. There is no need to tell you what your eyes can see plainly for yourself - that our system has grotesquely failed our children. The fact that the United States spends more money on education than any other nation in the history of the world, the fact that the United States employs more educators than soldiers, the fact that the United States takes thirteen years of our children’s lives and devotes them solely to education, makes our failure all the more humiliating. However, what makes the education system far more dangerous than mere academic incompetence is the fact that under its careful watch young men and women are increasingly becoming social degenerates. Instead of acting more and more like adults as they approach their graduation date, our young adults act more and more like wild self-indulgent children. In place of independent adults, the school system increasingly graduates lazy, ignorant, violent, incompetent, insecure, drugged-up, sexed-up, lost and confused boys and girls. This is the reality. This is what we are up against.
So, whether we choose public schooling, private schooling, or home schooling, one thing is certain - we must hold ourselves solely responsible for the outcome. Our children need highly involved parents, more than they need smaller classes, newer books, better uniforms, personal tutors, or state-of-the-art facilities. We are their best hope. The first thing we must do is decide what the True Aim of Education is and then commit to achieving that aim. If a way cannot be found, we must make one. That is the ultimate purpose of this blog. True Aim will provide you with the latest educational news and information, teaching tips, lesson materials, movie and book reviews, and discussions to help you discover the True Aim of Education - ensuring that you have what it takes to hit your mark.

Support for the Parental Rights Amendment continues to grow across the country, and is finding a voice in the states through state resolutions. Two particular challenges came to a head yesterday, and I am excited to share the outcomes with you.
First, HCR 11 in Michigan faced its first hurdle in the form of the House Committee on Families, Children, and Seniors, where a representative of the ACLU opposed the measure in a hearing last week. The last thing mentioned before the committee voted in their executive session yesterday was a reminder that the ACLU opposed the resolution. Nevertheless, the final vote to pass it out of committee with recommendation was 8 ayes, 0 nays, 1 pass (present but not voting). So despite ACLU opposition, Michigan is a giant step closer to calling on Congress to propose the Parental Rights Amendment.
Second....Continue reading on Examiner.com Legislative Update: PRA On the Move - National Christian Activism | Examiner.com http://www.examiner.com/christian-activism-in-national/legislative-update-pra-on-the-move#ixzz1mTcwO7j1

The petition (sign here! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/all-vaccines-are-banned/):
* Target: U. S. FEDERAL AND STATE LEGISLATORS, DOCTORS (ESPECIALLY PEDIATRICIANS), PARENTS, STUDENTS * Sponsored by: Sallie O. Elkordy
Proposed Legislation: ALL VACCINES ARE BANNED.This legislation has been written in response to constant legislative proposals to increase the number of Vaccines required of children (one NY State Assemblyman even had the gall to proposed 70 required vaccines for girls and 67 for boys up through the age of 18). None of us have the resources to combat each and every legislator's proposal, which may threaten our children's well being, HENCE:
Proposed Legislation: "ALL VACCINES ARE BANNED" unless they can be scientifically proven to meet these two criteria:
FIRST: DO NO HARM and
SECOND: ARE BENEFICIAL TO THE RECIPIENT'S HEALTH.
The burden of proof will now rest on the shoulders of those who would propose vaccines. Research to this end, must be conducted by those who do not stand to profit from the outcome.
Were these; the above criteria, established for the H1N1 Vaccine (Swine Flu Vaccine), it could never have even been offered (nor administered, nor mandated). Nor could Gardasil (HPV) have been offered or administered.
Regarding vaccine choice: Vaccine "Choice" presumes that you are making an educated assessment as to whether the vaccine(s) offered are good for you or your children. Education is not enough, because it can't compete with the one-sided message the Main Stream Media is flooding the airwaves with. There will always be people who accept vaccines because of this; thereby, potentially paying a huge price for their ignorance. These ignorant people and their children must also be protected.
Doctors cannot be relied upon to present a balanced perspective on these vaccines either (unfortunate, but true), so "choice" in it's truest sense, in the case of Vaccines, is not an accurate representation of the situation as it exists.
Note: Please refer to the National Vaccine Information Center for questions you may have about vaccines. This organization exists to inform parents and the general public about vaccine safety. Visit also Truth About Gardasil (.org), for the alarming realities of the HPV vaccine, currently being promoted for and injected into our daughters. IF YOU ARE A LEGISLATOR, PLEASE PROPOSE THIS LEGISLATION. IF YOU ARE NOT, PLEASE ASK YOUR LEGISLATORS TO PROPOSE THIS LEGISLATION: ALL VACCINES ARE BANNED. THANK YOU. To your health!

Ok.... As a Christian, I feel it is our responsibility to take care of this gift called earth our Heavenly Father has seen fit to create. I don't believe there's anyone better at doing so than our people -- His children. However, the EPA has gone WAY too far. I know the world isn't sane, but good gravy! How stupid do they think we are??? Ok, that's not a rhetorical question.
I'll let you be the judge. If you have family members or friends who farm, or own any rural property at all, you may want to warn them of the following article from the state where I live. BTW, to the right, under 'Featured Video', there's a news clip on the subject.

The EPA is considering regulations that would crack down on farm dust.

By Jacqueline Sit, NEWS 9
OKLAHOMA CITY -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering a crackdown on farm dust, so senators have signed a letter addressing their concerns on the possible regulations.
The letter dated July 23 to the EPA states, "If approved, would establish the most stringent and unparalleled regulation of dust in our nation's history." It further states, "We respect efforts for a clean and healthy environment, but not at the expense of common sense. These identified levels will be extremely burdensome for farmers and livestock producers to attain. Whether its livestock kicking up dust, soybeans being combined on a dry day in the fall, or driving a car down the gravel road, dust is a naturally occurring event."
Read the letter to EPA signed by 21 senators including Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn
Many in the Oklahoma farming industry are opposed to the EPA's consideration. One farmer said the possible regulations are ridiculous.
"It's plain common sense, we don't want to do anything detrimental," said farmer Curtis Roberts. "If the dust is detrimental to us, it's going to be to everybody. We're not going to do anything to hurt ourselves or our farm."
Roberts, a fourth generation farmer and rancher in Arcadia, said regulating dust in rural areas will hurt farmers' harvest, cultivation and livelihood.
"Anytime you work ground, you're going to have dust. I don't know how they'll regulate it," Roberts said. "The regulations are going to put us down and keep us from doing things we need to be doing because of the EPA."
Oklahoma Farm Bureau President Mike Spradling said the rules could be detrimental to farmers across the Sooner State.
"We as an organization do not feel dust is a pollutant," Spradling said. "It would almost be impossible to comply with what's being addressed now from the EPA as in agriculture. We're doing everything we possibly can."
"It's just common sense, we don't like dust in the morning but it's something we got to live with," Roberts said.

Jesus said in John 14:15, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Plain and simple. Yet most people find that they would rather do that which is right in their own eyes. They forsake the commandments given by a Holy God and forsake the fact that He is our Creator and that the creation is SUPPOSED to obey the Creator. But as the Bible says, “there is nothing new under the sun” and this has been going on since the “Garden” days. That is why we need true children of God to take a stand in this wicked, Sodom-like world we live in and follow God’s Word. That is where we will find true peace and happiness. It is not going to be found “camping in the wilderness of Sin.” We need to pack up our bed rolls and get out while we still have a chance. The lives and futures of our posterity are at stake.
Modesty Matters is one group dedicated to preserving our modesty, which is only ONE of the commandments God has set forth for us to follow. We have been so desensitized to nakedness, that most people don’t even know what we are talking about when we discuss modesty. I’m not even referring to “ancient, medieval” modesty, I’m talking about clothing ourselves so that our brother or sister doesn’t have occasion to stumble. We can still dress fashionably AND be modest. So let’s take a stand together for modesty AND for pursuing righteousness and holiness so that we might be light in a world full of darkness.

ParentalRights.org just released this exciting news!
For 4 weeks, ParetalRights.org (PR) has been urging the United States Senate to adopt Senate Resolution 519 to stop ratification of the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), an international treaty that would override parental rights in America. The PR organization has also been promoting the adoption of the Parental Rights Amendment (PRA) to the U.S. Constitution for a lot longer than that. Today, PR announced very exciting news items on both of these fronts.
First, the Louisiana House of Representatives on Monday voted 93-0 to urge the U.S. Congress to pass the PRA and send it to the States for ratification. The state senate had already adopted the measure, 34-0, making this a unanimous, broadly bi-partisan endorsement of the PRA.
Also on Monday, Senate Resolution 519 reached 20 cosponsors in the U.S. Senate, with the recent additions of Sens. Mike Crapo (ID), John Cornyn (TX) and Kit Bond (MO). The resolution needs only 34 cosponsors to reach the PR goal. (A treaty needs 67 votes for ratification; thus, when 34 senators publicly oppose the treaty, it is dead at least until the next election.)
Along with these two exciting announcements, ParentalRights issued this Action Alert:
First, invite your friends to listen to ParentalRights.org President Michael Farris on Nightside with Dan Rea at 9:00 p.m. tonight, June 16. The show is on WBZ News Radio, AM 1030 out of Boston, and can be heard on various CBS stations in 38 states or online at www.wbz.com. Farris will talk with Rea about S.R. 519 and the need to prevent ratification of the CRC. Senator Jim DeMint is also expected to call in and join the discussion. If you miss the show, some archives are available at WBZ.com after the fact – we hope this interview will be among them. (This show, with an audience of more than 1 million, is one of the developments we mentioned to you last week!)
Second, continue to call your Senators. It may seem tiresome by now, but think how tired their staff are getting! Last week, we heard from one Senator who fully supports what we stand for, but was planning to wait for the vote. With that information, we were able to inform his constituents of his confusion so they could clarify for his office that there will be no vote, that we just needed him to sign on. He is a cosponsor today because those supporters persisted and got him the right information. Find your Senator’s status and contact information at ParentalRights.org/Status and call today!
Third, if you are interested in networking with others in your area to promote our efforts for parental rights, please email Jonathan@parentalrights.org and ask for information on starting a chapter. (By the way, we welcome Jonathan as our new National Grassroots Coordinator, and wish godspeed to Eric, who is departing for law school.)

As a Christian, I want my voice to be heard. Living in the United States, I am blessed to live in a country in which we can make our voices heard. That makes us (those of us in the U.S.) in the minority world-wide. CHSH has members from around the world and not all have this freedom.
That is why I believe it is vital that we (who can) continue to make our voices heard. Recently, the Home School Legal Defense Association recommended a site for those of us living in the United States. The site is called America Speaking Out. If you want to know more about this site, who started it, why and how to get involved, please read my article: America Speaking Out - A place for your voice to be heard
